Magnetic Activity in Stellar Merger Products
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study the expected X-ray luminosity of stellar merger products several years after merger. The X-ray emission is assumed to result from magnetic activity. The extended envelope of the merger product possesses a large convective region and it is expected to rotate fast. The rotation and convection might give rise to an efficient dynamo operation, therefore we expect strong magnetic activity. Using well known relations connecting magnetic activity and X-ray luminosity in other types of magnetically active stars, we estimate that the strong X-ray luminosity will start several years after merger, will reach a maximum of Lx ∼ 3×10 30 erg s, and will slowly decline on a time scale of ∼ 100 yr. We predict that X-ray emission from V838 Mon which erupted in 2002 will be detected in 2008 with 20 hours of observation. Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملRejuvenation of stellar mergers and the origin of magnetic fields in massive stars
Approximately 10 per cent of massive OBA main-sequence (MS) and pre-MS stars harbour strong, large-scale magnetic fields. At the same time, there is a dearth of magnetic stars in close binaries. A process generating strong magnetic fields only in some stars must be responsible with the merging of pre-MS and MS stars being suggested as one such channel. Stars emerging from the coalescence of two...
متن کاملThe evolution of runaway stellar collision products
In the cores of young dense star clusters repeated stellar collisions involving the same object can occur, which has been suggested to lead to the formation of an intermediate-mass black hole. In order to verify this scenario we compute the detailed evolution of the merger remnant of three sequences. We follow the evolution until the onset of carbon burning and estimate the final remnant mass t...
متن کاملTimescales of merger , starburst and AGN activity in radio galaxy B 2 0648 + 27
In this paper we use neutral hydrogen (H I) and optical spectroscopic observations to compare the timescales of a merger event, starburst episode and radio-AGN activity in the radio galaxy B2 0648+27. We detect a large ring-like structure of H I in emission around the early-type host galaxy of B2 0648+27 (M H I = 8.5 × 10 9 M ⊙ , diameter = 190 kpc). We interpret this as the result of a major m...
متن کاملA New, Efficient Stellar Evolution Code for Calculating Complete Evolutionary Tracks
We present a new stellar evolution code and a set of results, demonstrating its capability at calculating full evolutionary tracks for a wide range of masses and metallicities. The code is fast and efficient, and is capable of following through all evolutionary phases, without interruption or human intervention. It is meant to be used also in the context of modeling the evolution of dense stell...
